Dress Code

Philosophy:  The purpose of the school dress code is to promote neatness, discipline, a sense of school identify, and to provide an atmosphere of learning free of emphasis on clothing.

The enforcement of the dress code is a joint responsibility of the parents, students, teachers and principal.  Parents must see that their children leave the house properly attired. The principal and teachers are to see that the students follow the dress code.  Appropriateness of dress is left to the discretion of the principal and teachers.  Most dress code items are available through the Shaheen Uniform Company, Artex and the Uniform Company.

A demerit will be issued after three (3) violations of the dress code.

SLACKS

Non-fading navy blue or dark khaki uniform straight-leg slacks.  No front seams, no
pockets below the hips, no oversized pockets, no patch pockets.  A solid navy, black or brown belt must be worn with slacks which have belt loops, and shirts must be tucked in so that the belt line can be seen.  These slacks must be uniform slacks purchased from the uniform suppliers Artex, Quality Uniform Company, or Shaheens..

SHORTS

Non-fading navy blue or dark khaki uniform shorts.  These shorts must be uniform shorts purchased from the uniform suppliers Artex, Quality Uniform Company or Shaheens. Uniform slacks may be cut off to make these shorts. The length should not be more than two (2) inches above the knee.  (Shorts may not be worn below the knee.)  A solid navy, black or brown belt must be worn with shorts which have belt loops, and shirts must be tucked in so that the belt line can be seen.

SKIRT/JUMPER

Girls may wear the uniform plaid or navy skirt/jumper not more than two (2) inches above or below the knee.

SHIRTS

Plain white, light blue, or red (not cranberry) long or short sleeve, 3-button or less placket knit shirt.  Permanent press dress shirt with collar and button-down oxford shirts in white or light blue are acceptable. A solid white turtleneck or mock turtleneck may be worn only under a long sleeved shirt, the uniform sweatshirt, or jumper.  Shirts must be tucked in at all times so that the belt can be seen.

SWEATERS

Only knitted sweaters in solid colors of red, navy, or white may be worn.  The red Holy Spirit School sweatshirt or pullover sweaters may be worn over a solid white turtleneck or a uniform shirt.

SHOES

Shoelaces must match the major color of the shoes, be laced up, and tied at all times.  Sandals and platform  heels (two inches or higher) are not permitted.  All shoes must be closed toe and heel.

SOCKS

Boys may wear plain ankle to mid-calf socks in white, navy blue or red.  Girls may wear plain ankle to knee length socks in white, navy blue or red.  Girls may also wear plain tights/leotards in white, navy blue or red.

JEWELRY/ACCESSORIES

Only necklaces with religious symbols (medals, crosses, etc.) preferably on small chains may be worn. Students may wear one ring per hand (nothing large or chunky) and may wear only post earrings (no loops, hoops, etc.), one per ear.  Boys are not permitted to wear earrings to school.  Hair accessories must be red, navy blue, or white. 

HOLY SPIRIT SCHOOL HAS
 TWO NON-UNIFORM DRESS DAYS:

    SPIRIT DRESS DAY

Spirit Dress Day is held once a quarter and will be communicated on the school calendar.  During Spirit Dress Days uniform shorts or pants MUST be worn.  Shirts may be only red or the optional Memorial Tiger or Cougar T-shirt available through Artex.  Students who are on Holy Spirit School sponsored teams, Memorial Cub teams or Tiger Cub Teams may wear team shirts on these days. A white T-shirt must be worn under all sleeveless or mesh team shirts.

    OPTIONAL DRESS DAY

Optional Dress day will be the last Friday of each month.  Shoes must not be open-toed, open-heeled or platform shoes.  Shorts in grades 4-8 need to be “walking shorts” or no more than 3 inches above the knee.  Baggy shorts are accepted only if they fit at the waist.  No over-size baggy pants are permitted.  Pants must not drag the floor and they must fit at the waist.  No torn jeans or cut-off fringed jean shorts are permitted.  Shirts may not advertise beer, alcohol, or tobacco products, nor can they be offensive, degrading or promote violence (WWF apparel is not permitted).  Sleeveless shirts are permitted.  Tank tops are not allowed.

THE FOLLOWING IS NOT PERMITTED AT ANY TIME
  • Oversized clothing. Students may not hold up their pants in order to walk.
  • Coats, jackets, or hats during class.
  • Shoes with more than a two-inch heel, clogs, or open toed shoes.
  • Make-up, colored nail polish, false fingernails, perfume, colognes.
  • Dangling earrings, beads, bangle bracelets, feathers, sashes, etc.
  • Hair that obstructs vision; boys’ hair may not be longer than collar length and must be cut above the ear.  No shaved heads. Hair must be a minimum of ¼” length.
  • Hairstyles and hair color bordering on the extreme (e.g. designs cut into the hair, hair color that is two tone or in total contrast of normal hair color.)
  • Beeping watches; alarms must be turned off.
  • Short shorts (no more than 3 inches above the knee for optional dress days).
  • Nylon/mesh (see through) shorts or warm up pants.
